Independent views By Brendan Horan |
Though politicians are lowly-ranked on most popularity polls, I personally take the job seriously – and I believe there's a better way to involve the public in the role and work of their MP.
Communities should be able to take ownership of the decisions their Member of Parliament makes for their electorate.
Public ownership and involvement is a real option in today's electronic world – the change is not great, but for many I notice hesitation about any level of change.
Common comments include: 'Well, I have voted for my party for the last 40 years, why would I change?”
Yet the same person is holding onto a smartphone, when 40 years ago they would have used a dial-button or even wind-up phone; and many shared a party line with other families.
Change is inevitable; it is about progress. This is why NZ Independent Coalition talks about progressive politics, progressing with the times and utilising the changing tools we have to better do our work – working better.
NZ Independent Coalition is committed to a simple, common sense concept of political representation where we literally are the voice representing the peoples' voice.
This works by NZ Independent Coalition politicians maintaining contact with their electorates throughout the political term, informing constituents and asking – through binding mini referendums – for the electorate to decide how their MP will vote on legislation before the House of Representations and Parliament.
