Sport Bay of Plenty's early childhood team has been promoting the benefit of movement to children's development across the Bay for the last nine years.
These workshops educate parents, teachers and community groups on how best to ensure under-fives remain active.
Movement experiences in the early years have a huge influence on lifestyle choices made later on in life.
An active workshop run by Bay Of Plenty Sport is being praised by PORSE New Zealand's leading in-home childcare provider.
PORSE recently took part in one of Sport BOP's Move, Laugh, Grow workshops which explains how children grow and develop and what negative impactour increasingly sedentary lives is having once children start school.
Participants also leave with lots of fun new and exciting games and activities our very youngest will love to play
PORSE regional coach, Rebecca Max, says part of the PORSE philosophy is to promote active lifestyles for children under five so the organisation teamed up with Sport Bay of Plenty to facilitate a workshop for educators and families to promote active movement. She says it was a very educational workshop and well organised.
'The hands-on workshop allowed our educators to gain further understanding of the importance of active movement, and ideas on activities and resources they can provide in their own homes when planning individual programmes for the children in their care.
'Additionally the content links closely with PORSE's Level 3 NZQA Training as it too promotes the value of play and teaches about developmentally appropriate resources.
'PORSE works alongside our educators to support them. We organise a variety of events which promote NaturePlay, encouraging children to get out into the fresh air and learn through outdoor exploration.
'Being home based, we have easy access to everything the community offers and the Sport Bay of Plenty workshop aligns very closely with our NaturePlay philosophy. 'Kirsty spoke about how our life styles have changed and how we need to specifically make a point of being active with our children.
'PORSE is all about traditional childcare, where children can naturally play and learn in a home environment, so this resonated well with those that attended.”
Rebecca says the collaboration with Sport Bay of Plenty is important in helping educate the community about the importance of active lifestyles.
'Getting children active for thirty minutes each day is really important. Our PORSE educators will encourage physical activity in their individual programmes.”
