Nicki Scott Virtually on Track Project Leader Sport Bay of Plenty |
Discover, explore and connect with the new and exciting Virtually on Track project. A unique partnership has formed between the regional Department of Conservation office, Sport Bay of Plenty and Sport NZ to bring an innovative approach to adventure sport and recreation in the Bay of Plenty.
This region is rich with beautiful parks, spaces and reserves; and Virtually on Track is designed to connect these natural resources with regular adventure sport and recreation activities and opportunities.
The project aims to trial different uses of technology. A ‘virtual hub' and social media will be activated to connect people with each other and the recreation spaces throughout the Bay. Apps will be used to create fun challenges encouraging more people to get out and explore our unique spaces.
The project is focused on eight local gem sites under DOC classification:Rotorua Eastern Lakes; McLaren Falls and Lower Kaimai; Kawerau and Tarawera; Waihi Beach and coastline; Whakatane and Ohiwa Harbour; Papamoa Hills range; Opotiki and Motu; Otanewainuku and Kaharoa Corridor.
Virtually on Track will be kicking off with an official public launch at the beginning of November in collaboration with Conservation Week.
Come along to a launch event, check out the promotional video, have a go at some adventure activities and learn about how you can get involved with the project.
Each local gem will host an event, with eight events during nine days. Different activities will be available depending on the site, including mountain biking, geo-teering, geocaching, stand up paddling, kayaking, waka ama and orienteering.
There will also be a conservation activity at each event if you're keen to get your hands dirty. With so many precious and unique conservation areas across the Bay of Plenty there are many ways to get involved in the community to protect our special areas whether it is pest control, dune care, planting trees or caring for native wildlife. Learn what's going on near your favourite recreation space.
Along with the local events the launch will publicise the new website, social media and promotional videos – all showcasing the awesome opportunities on offer at each gem right here in our backyard.
