Todd Talks By Todd Muller |
Two weeks ago we sat glued in front of our televisions to watch the election results trickle in. It gave a record result for the National Party and your humbling support for me personally catapulted me into a new life. Thank you again for your support. I will work hard to earn your trust.
As I stepped out of the aircraft at Wellington airport the following Monday – true to the capital's spring form, the weather was fit for ducks – the enormity and privilege of being the elected representative for the Bay of Plenty sunk in.
Like any organisation, Parliament has its own processes and systems. The Parliamentary Services staff have been outstanding in their support along the way.
They provided a comprehensive induction which covered everything; including staffing arrangements, select committee meetings, caucus, speaking in the House and question time, to name a few. Their support essentially ensures we hit the ground running when Parliament resumes on October 20.
In some ways it feels like going back to school, even though I've walked through the building many times as a staffer to Jim Bolger and more recently with Zespri and Fonterra, it's quite different when you're on the other side, the actual MP. I felt the sense of history and obligation. This role genuinely gives you an opportunity to make a difference for the people of the Bay.
Despite spending most of my time in Wellington during the last two weeks, I did get some time in the electorate opening the Papamoa Patchers Exhibition, which showcased the quilting talents of our locals and attending the Papamoa beachwalk in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
As I walked along the beach with my three children, I couldn't help but think of the family of Jack Dixon.
It's been a heartbreaking week and my thoughts and prayers are with the family. I'm hopeful the enveloping love of our community is helping them through their grief.
