Beautiful You by Suzanne Edmonds |
Each week, beauty enthusiast Suzanne Edmonds explores the best ways to take care of ourselves so that we love the skin we're in.
Brrr! The latest cold snap has us delving deep into our winter wardrobes. It's common sense to change your clothes with the seasons but did you know that your skincare regime should also change with the seasons?
Many of us suffer dry and chapped skin on our hands, face, lips and body during the winter months, but with the right care and attention you can avoid the uncomfortable effects of dehydrated skin.
Cold, dry air, harsh winds, roaring fires and hot showers can all dry out your skin. To keep your skin healthy, soft and well hydrated it is important to preserve its natural oils. The way to do this is two-fold - go lightly on cleansing products and up the ante with moisturiser.
Switch to a mild facial cleanser for the winter. If your skin feels tight after washing, it means too any of its natural lipids (oils) have been removed.
Avoid washing the skin on the back of your hands too often, as it's more fragile and prone to dryness. Instead, concentrate on washing your palms, being sure to rinse off all the soap in between your fingers. Stay clear of hand sanitising solutions, unless absolutely necessary, as they can be extremely drying.
To keep your skin hydrated it is important to moisturise immediately after washing to lock in the water that has soaked into your skin. Moisturise you face after cleansing, ideally morning and night, your body straight after your bath or shower, and your hands every time you wash them.

And, as tempting as it might be, avoid long, hot showers and baths. Keep your bathing as brief as possible, using lukewarm – not hot – water.
To keep your lips in tip-top condition, coat them with hydrating lip balm throughout the day – choose one with a scent and texture that you won't be able to resist!
When it comes to choosing moisturising products for your winter beauty bag, make sure you choose products that suit your skin type. While you might need a richer moisturiser during the colder months, if you choose one that is too rich for your skin you will run into other problems. If you are unsure, seek advice from your beauty therapist.
Investing time in your winter skincare regime now will ensure supple, summer, beach- ready skin when the warmer weather returns.
