It's true! Studies show that this generation of teenagers could have up to seven different careers in their lifetimes. So, when your child says they might like to become a veterinarian, or an architect, or an actress, or a teacher, consider that they just might do it all.
Increasingly, the most successful careers are able to combine seemingly different career paths. For example, a veterinarian would make the perfect architect for creating animal spaces such as zoos, dog kennels or birdhouses. This same vet-tect could be instructing others in these areas of discipline while engaging in community theatre - or acting in cat food commercials. It's a busy life, but the way our teens drag us from one activity to the next all week, it's not a far stretch of the imagination.
What these studies really show is that teenagers, and their parents, don't have to feel the immense pressure of choosing the one right career path to pursue for the rest of their lives.
They can focus on making a first decision that will start them on their path to many interesting and often successful careers twists and turns.
This way of looking at careers should remove a lot of the pressure teens feel when they worry about making the wrong choice.
With the pressure off, teens and parents can engage in more constructive conversations around choosing courses, deciding between universities or engaging in tertiary training.
