Careers with Hart with Jay Hart |
Last week, I got to experience the luminarium on The Strand and a facial at the spa. These experiences specifically targeting the senses helped me remember the importance of our five senses towards promoting our success and happiness - even at work.
If our work environment is too hot or too cold, we won't want to be there. If there are no pictures of the people and things we love in our immediate workspace, we may not feel a sense of belonging.
An environment where there is a lot of competing noise will overstimulate some, while working in a very quite environment could make others feel restless.
Working next to a bakery is likely to keep us smiling all day. Working above a paint shop may encourage grumpiness.
And because most of our tastebuds are in our nose, satisfying our sense of smell will help satisfy our sense of taste. However, because 90 per cent of our emotions are in our gut, we should still consider our stomachs at work.
While we cannot control everything about our work environment, we can take a moment to reflect on our five senses and consider small changes to promote our happiness within our workspace.
So, take in a small heater or fan as needed. Put up some paintings or pictures. If you're working out of your car or truck, tape some pictures up against the dashboard.
Find your favourite radio station online. And try taking soothing, non-offensive smells to work, like flowers or a lavender fragrance diffuser. All else failing, give your workspace a good scrub! Everyone loves the 'clean' smell.
And eat well. Low blood-sugar levels destroy workplace satisfaction. So, make sure you take that lunch break and remember to keep healthy snacks near your desk.
Enjoy your work! And be sure to keep in touch.
