The cherry blossoms are starting to show in Greerton, which means it's time for the community's annual spring festival this Saturday.
'They're just starting to pop up,” says Greerton Village community association vice chair Sharyn Affleck. 'That's always exciting when the blossoms turn up for the festival.”
The Greerton Village Cherry Blossom Festival is at Greerton Village School on September 26 and Sharyn says it will feature the usual fun family entertainment it brings every year.
From 10am-2pm, there'll be market stalls, children's entertainment including a giant bouncy slide, dancing and street performers, and the Night Owl Car Boot Sale.
Sharyn says it's a perfect fun day out for the family.
'It's a great community event that has been going for years and growing every year.”
A feature of this year's festival will be the Street Machines and Custom Car Show, which includes a moving display of about 120 classic cars.
Sharyn says the road will be closed between Cameron Rd and Chadwick Rd, and will possibly spill onto the school grounds for festival-goers to get up close and personal with the vintage vehicles.
Greerton Village School Year 5 pupil Alisia Stoian says the school is fundraising for a community information billboard at this year's festival.
'There'll be tonnes of different stalls including an international food stall serving Mexican nachos, seafood chowder, candy floss, cakes, big pan pikelets, just to name a few.”
Alisia says senior classes have organised games for children and adults, with prizes to giveaway and there'll also be quick fire raffles with a variety of prizes on offer.
'GVS will be showing off their talents with performances by kapahaka, our Hindi Disco Dance Group, Jump Jam and our GreVouS band. Slides, pony rides and a petting zoo are also included. Don't miss this awesome opportunity, see you there.”
This year's festival is supported by the Problem Gambling Foundation and Salvation Army.
The 2015 Greerton Village Cherry Blossom Festival is at Greerton Village School on Saturday, September 26, from 10am-2pm. Entry is free.
