Three generations of musicians are looking forward to entertaining when Tauranga City Brass presents the iconic Last Night of the Proms.
Steve Thompson is conductor and three of his sons, Jeremy, Chris and Ben as well as his grandson Arthur all play instruments.
“I’m very proud of having my family involved. It’s a great thing for kids to work towards. Once they get the bug for performing, they’re hooked. It’s a good challenge,” said Steve Thompson.
Jeremy plays solo cornet, while his nephew, Arthur, who’s Year 9 at Bethlehem College, sits a row behind playing repiano cornet. Also a pianist, the 13-year-old took up the brass instrument just two years ago.
“I think it’s really cool that family traditions keep going,” said Arthur.
His dad, Chris, is on the solo horn.
“It is fun. It’s very much a team effort. Everyone needs to do their part for it to work. The Last Night of the Proms is really recognisable music and we have the Bethlehem School Choir accompanying us,” said Chris Thompson.
In fact, attendees are encouraged to dress in the British red, white and blue and can expect to get involved.
“It’s an English tradition so there’s lots of fun for the family with foot stomping, clapping and singing along,” said Steve Thompson. “It’s on every two years and is well attended. The band looks forward to it, too. We really enjoy it.”
Tauranga City Brass presents Last Night at the Proms featuring the Bethlehem College Choir on Sunday, November 17 from 4pm at Graham Young Youth Theatre, Tauranga.
