As winter bites across Tauranga, a homelessness support group is urging the community to dig into wardrobes and spare cupboards to help those facing the cold on the streets.
Under The Stars has launched its annual Warmer Winter Appeal calling for donations of essential items to support people experiencing homelessness through the cooler months.
The Tauranga-based charitable organisation supports people experiencing homelessness and hardship.
Operating from Cliff Rd Hall, it provides practical assistance including food, clothing, advocacy and connections to support services.
The group says the cold is already being felt by some of the city’s most vulnerable, with demand for warm clothing and shelter-related items increasing as temperatures drop.
General manager Chris Emmett said the organisation focused on the needs of the homeless community at the start of winter.
“Things are a little bit tougher, and there’s a whole lot of vulnerable people out there that are in tough situations.
“At this time of the year, things get colder and a little bit more difficult for the homeless community and the vulnerable community.
“So that’s where we’ve built up our capability to be able to help support people in need.”
Throughout the year, Under the Stars distributes meals, donated clothing, bedding and other essentials directly to people accessing its services.
The organisation also works alongside other community agencies to connect people with housing, health and social support where needed.
This winter, donations of jackets, coats and other warm clothing were being sought, along with scarves, beanies, gloves and socks.
“We go through the items and make a judgment on what can and can’t be used and then, at any one time, they’re laid out, for people to have a look through,” Emmett said.
He said people can choose what they can use themselves because everyone’s situation was different.
“There’s a whole lot of people out there that mightn’t be in the same situation, so, that’s why we put the spotlight on at this time of the year.”
The items make a significant difference for those spending extended time outdoors.
“It’s about the community being resilient and looking after the most vulnerable people.
“If we can lessen the transition of people’s situations, so it’s not chronic, it’s more episodic, that will help with our community’s wellbeing.”
The appeal also includes requests for larger items such as tents, blankets and sleeping bags, which help provide basic protection from harsh weather conditions.
New and gently used items are welcome, provided they are clean and in good condition, making it easy for people to contribute practically.
“We are here to help and support, but what we should be trying to do is move people through a transition into a better situation.”
Donations can be dropped off at Cliff Rd Hall during scheduled collection times throughout the week as part of the Winter Warmer Appeal, which will run for the next six to eight weeks.
Under the Stars encourages anyone unable to attend to get in touch directly to offer support in other ways.
