An exhibition that told the stories of the creation of Tauranga city from a time of conflict and battle is to be auctioned off.

The Battle of Gate Pa Exhibition will be auctioned off at The Cargo Shed at 10am on April 22 with viewing on April 21.

Terry Molloy, who chairs the Battle of Gate Pa Charitable Trust, says the auction will include all the framing, sound system and TV modules that made up the display.

The Battle of Gate Pa ‘Rules of Engagement' Exhibition, originally held at Greerton Hall, was organised by the trust as part of the 150th commemoration of the Battle of Gate Pa at Pukehinahina in 2014.

The exhibition ran from April to June 2014 and was then relocated to The Strand for a second showing. As well as telling the stories of the creation of Tauranga city from a time of conflict and battle the exhibition featured a short film featuring locals talking about the history of the battles.

People could walk two pathways leading to a model of the field of battle – one that followed the story of a Maori warrior and the other a colonial soldier.

The trust hopes to recover some of the cost of storage of the exhibition.

'A school or marae may like parts of the display for their entrance way,” says Terry. 'In the future we are looking at a different form of exhibition to be part of a purpose-built display in Gate Pa.”

Anyone interested in the display can contact Terry on: 027 494 0296.
