Meandering by moonlight for charity

A group of night walkers celebrates after last year’s event.

While many people are hunkering down in front of the fire and TV next Friday and Saturday evening, dozens of brave and hardy souls will be going on a five kilometer, one-hour romp through the Papamoa Hills for the benefit of others.

It's the tenth Papamoa Hills Night Walk event. Held in the moonlight – hopefully – with stunning night views over Tauranga, the walk supports the work of the Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust.

This year the Night Walk will be held on Friday, June 14, and Saturday June 15.

Organisers say there will be an 'extra sparkle” to the event this year – the age threshold for children has been lowered from 13 and over to ten.

Also new this year is Legacy Trust's commitment as principal sponsor of the Night Walk. Legacy Trust general manager Kiri Randall says the trust has long supported Tauranga's breast cancer support service. In the past it's held annual lunches in support of the organization. That backing for the breast cancer cause remained and had simply switched to a different event.

The Friday walk will begin at 6pm, finishing at 7.30pm, while Saturday's would have the earlier starting time of 5.30pm. The five-kilometre walk is based in Papamoa Hills Regional Park, beginning in Poplar Lane and ending at Summerhill Farm where coffee and cake will await. Entrants will be returned by minivans to the starting point.

If you plan to bring children make sure you get in early to book for the 5.30 wave of walkers on Saturday night. Only two children per adultare allowed and that adult must be over the age of 18. Accompanying adults are responsible for their children at all times.

Others keen to take part must book in advance and the cost is $29 per walker. Tickets can be purchased via www.breastcancerbop.org.nz or by phoning 07 5713346.
