Participating is the best bit

Angie Warren-Clark
Labour MP

The best part of my job as an MP is about getting out in our community to meet the many interesting and diverse people across the Bay of Plenty electorate.

On Friday I attended the Bay of Plenty Envirohub Speakers Forum, this talk focused on how essential it is that Central Government, Local Government, business, communities and individuals work together in order to achieve net Carbon Zero by 2050, as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said, Climate Change is this generations nuclear free moment.

Keeping with the environmental theme, on Monday I headed along to the University of Waikato's Coastal Marine Field Station at Sulphur point where I learnt about the work that is being undertaken by researchers and students in monitoring and understanding our marine environment.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Inaugural Bayfair Festival of Competitive Disability Sports at ASB Baypark Arena where athletes from around the country came together to compete in four different sporting codes. I had a go at Wheelchair Rugby, well, I managed to get the Wheelchair across the court and smash into a couple people, but I left the experts from the Tauranga wheelchair rugby team the Steamrollers to really compete! The speed and agility they display in the game is incredible.

At the awards and celebration dinner we were fortunate enough to hear from Four-time Paralympian Adam Hall. Hall was fresh from winning a gold in the Men's Slalom Standing and bronze in the Men's Super Combined Standing events during the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea. Hall gave fascinating insights into his time at the Winter Games and left us with an inspiring message of hope and perseverance.

Speaking of Winter, this Easter Weekend will see the end of daylight savings. If you're anything like me you'll be wanting to make the most of the long weekend before the clocks go back an hour on Sunday. Fortunately Tauranga has many events on, from the Jazz Festival through to Demo Ramp Derby and stockcars at Baypark. Whatever it is you do, don't be shy on the chocolate eggs and have a safe and enjoyable long weekend!
