Sport Bay of Plenty

We are spoilt for outdoor choices In the Bay of Plenty region, with stunning parks, beaches and reserves to explore; however many locals don't know these ‘gems' even exist.

Virtually on Track is a great initiative that aims to shed light on some of these places and introduce the many recreational opportunities and adventure sports available to enjoy. This project is a partnership between Sport New Zealand, Sport Bay of Plenty and the Department of Conservation, with support from the local councils to meet the core objective for people to ‘Discover, Explore and Connect'. Discover a new activity, explore your local gems and connect through the local virtual hub at www.virtuallyontrack.co.nz.

The comprehensive Virtually on Track website showcases eight significant recreational locations known as gem sites across the whole Bay of Plenty that offer options like walking and running tracks, kayaking and waka ama, mountain biking, horse riding, stand up paddle boarding and activities to connect with conservation efforts. Use the website to find groups and clubs or information on the many activities you can do individually or as a family.

For those who like combining technology with your outdoor adventures, try geoteering, geocaching, and QR codes or compete in a Strava challenge. Geocaching is like a treasure hunt, download the app to your phone and find the hidden geocaches; children love this activity and it's a fun way to explore. We have regular virtual challenges where you can record your times and distance travelled and try and better your times or compete against others.

Ensure you stay in touch with the latest happenings on the gem sites though Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Blogs and photos are posted regularly inspiring you to try something new and learn from others' recent experiences.

So don't wait any longer to experience the abundance of activities that await you just a short drive away. Pack a picnic and discover the many free activities available in your back yard.
