Flag it – it’s time for a change

I'm going to vote for a change of flag. I'm very proud to be a Kiwi and I'm emotionally attached to our existing flag – but I think it is time for a change.

We live in a different world to the one which existed when our flag was designed with the Union Jack in the corner.

We need to be looking forward, rather than backwards – so while I respect the heritage enshrined in the current flag, it is time we have a flag that represents us, not our old colonial past.

Our current flag is too similar to the Australian flag. We need a flag which is unique, instantly recognised, and which contains purely New Zealand symbolism. I like the integration of the silver fern and the Southern Cross.

My original preference was for the red, white and blue version, but I can live with the black because we identify so strongly with it through our sporting codes. So I'm going to vote for a change and will be awaiting the result of the referendum, whichever way it goes, with anticipation and pride.

You may not agree with my choice. You may not agree with the process or the cost. I think the focus on our nationhood and our identity is worth the price – if we all feel enhanced pride in being a New Zealander and all it represents. I hope you all vote, for whichever version you favour, because democracy will be the winner.
