Hot dog competition returns

People will be absolutely stuffing their faces tomorrow for the RYE American Kitchen & Spirits 2nd Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Ten men and women will see how many hot dogs they can handle as they compete for the prestige of first place.

RYE manager Jay Kolenski says the competition is based on the Nathan's hotdog eating competition in America.

'It's basically how many hot dogs, aka the actual frankfurter, and buns you can eat in 10 minutes.”

The gorging is all for a good cause, though, with funds being raised for Movember.

'It's an official Movember event, and we're trying to raise as many donations as we can on the day,” says Jay.

'It's about getting the message out about Movember and men's health in New Zealand.”

Jay says last year's inaugural event was actually set up on a whim.

'The first event was a bigger success than we thought it would be. We weren't sure how many people were going to show up.

'But it was pretty well received. We got really close to our $2000 fundraising mark last year, so this year we're pushing for $2500. Hopefully we can do it for a good cause.”

This year's competitors include MORE FM breakfast host Justin Evans, Block NZ contestant Dylan ‘Big Dyls' Cossey, Tauranga fireman and former Steamer Dan Goodwin, All Black Nathan Harris, Bell Plumbing's Tim Coad, former chef Jaco Wessels, Mediaworks Tauranga's Casey Rarere, Bay of Plenty Steamer Tim Bond, competitive eater and model Nela Zisser, and reigning champ ‘Tiny'.

It's open to the public, so anyone can watch. There will be live music, face painting and free hotdogs for the kids.

'The more the merrier,” says Jay.

RYE's 2nd Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest is on November 26 from 2pm at RYE American Kitchen and Spirits, 19 Wharf Street, Tauranga.
